Taxing Unrealized Capital Gains is a Terrible Idea
Notes: I agree with Tyler C. Read this follow up. I don’t see how this policy won’t just lead to more elaborate tax planning and asset price distortions. A local example for my readers is WA. The state is imposing a 7% capital gains tax, but only on long-term capital gains greater than 250K from stocks, bonds, etc. on domiciled individuals. What did people do? Moved out of state (e.g. Bezos to Florida), refrained from selling above a cumulative 250k in gains, planned to sell more frequently to stay below the limit over the years, or completely changed investment strategies… There are more efficient ways to raise government revenues.
